JOB DESCRIPTION – FORM CARPENTER-CIVIL

For applicants that don't meet all the requirments listed below, the pay range is $29 - $34/hr. Pay based on experience. 

SUMMARY: 

Bowen is a self-performing general contractor with operation centers across the country.  Bowen delivers self-perform construction services including site, civil, structural, boilermaker and mechanical construction.  With a history in Water, Wastewater, Energy and Industrial Markets, Bowen is a nationwide Industrial Water, CSO, ELG, and CCR construction expert.  Bowen has constructed over 1,000 treatment facilities, and has strong physical-chemical, biological, evaporator experience with multiple technology partners. The Form Carpenter- Civil is responsible for constructing, erecting, repairing, and dismantling built-in-place or prefabricated forms for concrete structures or foundations in a safe and quality manner. He/ She will work closely with the Senior Crafts persons with a goal of obtaining sufficient knowledge and experience, en route to advancing his or her career. The Carpenter will work until time has proven the necessary knowledge and experience through testing and certification completion. Once these requirements have been met, the employee is able to advance.

Our teamwork environment may require all employees from time to time to perform other duties outside of their job description and normal work functions.  Our standard work environment will be on a project site that is subjected to outdoor weather conditions and must utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in preparation for a variety of potential hazards.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Construction and installation of concrete forms.
  • Cuts, bends, and shapes rebar for concrete forms.
  • Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float. Not primary, but ability
  • Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
  • Operate power vibrator to compact concrete.
  • Edging of concrete pour, floating of concrete.
  • Use of appropriate hand tools for hammer, 4’ level, pry bar, cum-along, clamps, soft excavation, shovel, rake, pickax, etc.
  • Assembles and fastens with appropriate fasteners such as nails, pins, screws, bolts, and clamps.
  • Verifies installation of forms with appropriate tools such as string line, plumb bob, carpenter’s level, and/or framing square
  • Use of a Transit and Level for elevation / grade measurements
  • Knowledge of crane signals for movement of concrete buckets and materials
  • Uses tools such as a rod bender, tape plumb bob, level, and chalk line.
  • Use of a tape measure.
  • Knowledge of spacing requirements.
  • Studies construction drawings, sketches, building plans, and specifications for information pertaining to requirements and dimensions.
  • Prepares layouts using appropriate tools.
  • Fabricates materials to prescribed measurements using appropriate tools such as hand or power saws, chisels, and planes.
  • Material identification by type and dimension. Determines type, size, and quantity of materials needed.
  • Use of tagline to unload materials and equipment.
  • Mathematic skills as they pertain to job activities.
  • Knowledge of construction terminology.
  • Read and understand the work safety permits.
  • Pouring and finishing of concrete- as needed (not primary duty)
  • Basic rigging knowledge
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work environment and maintains housekeeping of job site.
  • Returns all tools and materials used by the crew to the proper place at the end of shift.
  • Must fully participate in the safety assessment of the job and completion of JSA’s.
  • Fully participate in health, safety, quality and environmental processes.
  • Is an ambassador for Bowen to the client, other contractors, and to the public.
  • Provide leadership and knowledge to employees in lower classifications.
  • Not only works well as part of a team but promotes team values for others.
  • Must be willing to contribute to the development of other employees, including on the job training for Rod busters, Carpenter helpers, and Laborers.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must comply with Bowen’s drug and alcohol policy.
  • May be required to pass physical examination (pre-employment if necessary) as required by Bowen.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairways.
  • Must be able to carry 50 lbs. of tools and/or materials.
  • Must be able to work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces. (towers, vessels, excavations, etc.)
  • Must be able to work extended hours on your feet on uneven surfaces. (dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.)
  • Must be able to pass applicable site-specific safety training.
  • Must undertake the appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with the position and location.
  • Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels and permits in English.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in similar type carpentry work.
  • Must be willing to attend continued training required by Bowen when deemed necessary.
  • Must pass a craft-specific test (either written, performance or both when required)

PREFERRED:

  • High school education
  • Layout training
  • Familiar with tall wall formwork construction
