Description
The position is located in Sells, AZ.
Position Summary:
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation of heavy duty equipment efficiently and safely.
The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Operates a variety of equipment in an effective and safe manner, such as: graders, forklifts, large backhoes, front-end loaders, crawler tractors, small bobcats, and bulldozers.
Operates a truck trailer with lowboy unit attached for transporting heavy equipment.
Performs minor maintenance and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
Notifies supervisory personnel for need of regular, preventative, or emergency maintenance of all heavy equipment.
Performs duties under varied field conditions.
Transports and dumps loose material such as soil, sand, gravel, crushed rock, to specific project sites.
Grades surface, compacts soil, or rolls to exact specifications.
Logs and submits written reports at the request of the supervisor.
Attends maintenance and safety training workshops.
Logs and schedules maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles.
Protects and secures equipment and supplies at the end of each work day.
Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
Knowledge of the operation of hydraulic operated equipment.
Knowledge of tribal communities and business locations within the Tohono O'odham Nation.
Knowledge of safety requirements and practices for heavy equipment operation.
Skill in safely operating and maintaining heavy equipment and machinery.
Skill in following written and verbal instructions.
Skill in operation of various types of heavy trucks and equipment.
Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
Ability to coordinate eye-hand-foot movements.
Ability to service, adjust and make minor repairs to heavy equipment.
Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to operate heavy equipment in a responsible and safe manner.
Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and five years of work experience in the operation and general maintenance of heavy equipment, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
Must obtain certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within six months of hire.
Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
May require possessing and maintaining a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
