Low Voltage Technician

Department: Data Center Infrastructure Location: On-Site – Data Center Facility Role Type: Full-Time

About Our Client

Our client is a well-established infrastructure and managed services firm with over 15 years of experience delivering mission-critical cabling and low voltage solutions to enterprise customers. Operating across multiple regions with facilities in major metropolitan markets, the company specializes in structured cabling, network infrastructure buildouts, and data center support services. Their client base spans industries including finance, healthcare, government, and technology, making reliability and precision central to everything they do. With a culture built on craftsmanship, safety, and continuous growth, they provide technicians with the tools, training, and environment needed to do their best work.

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Low Voltage Technician to join our client's data center infrastructure team on a full-time basis. In this role, you will be responsible for the installation, termination, testing, and documentation of Cat 5e and Cat 6 structured cabling systems within a live data center environment. Day-to-day work includes pulling and routing copper cable, dressing cable in overhead trays and below-floor pathways, terminating patch panels and jacks, and performing certification testing to ensure all runs meet industry standards.

This position plays a vital role in keeping the data center running at peak performance. Your work will directly support the network uptime and operational reliability that our client's enterprise customers depend on. You will collaborate closely with project managers, network engineers, and other field technicians to execute cabling projects on schedule and to specification. This is an excellent opportunity for a technician who takes pride in clean, professional installations and wants to grow within a company that values expertise in structured cabling.

The ideal candidate is someone with hands-on experience in commercial or data center cabling environments, a strong understanding of TIA/EIA standards, and a passion for doing the job right the first time. You will report directly to the Lead Technician or Project Manager on-site and may assist in mentoring junior installers as projects scale.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, route, and terminate Cat 5e and Cat 6 copper cabling in data center environments, including overhead trays, conduit, and raised floor pathways.
  • Terminate cable runs to patch panels, keystone jacks, and wall plates following TIA/EIA 568 standards.
  • Perform cable certification testing using Fluke or similar testing equipment and document all results.
  • Dress and bundle cable in a neat, professional manner consistent with data center best practices.
  • Label all cables, panels, and ports clearly and accurately per project documentation.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, and cable schedules to execute work accurately.
  • Coordinate with network engineers and project managers to ensure installations align with project specifications.
  • Troubleshoot cabling issues, including continuity failures, cross-pairs, and signal degradation.
  • Maintain a clean and safe job site in accordance with OSHA standards and data center security protocols.
  • Complete daily work logs, as-built documentation, and job completion reports.
  • Support project leads with materials management, inventory tracking, and equipment staging.
  • Adhere to all data center access procedures, including badge protocols and escorted entry requirements.

Required Experience / Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience installing and terminating Cat 5e and/or Cat 6 structured cabling.
  • Proficiency in cable termination techniques including punch-down and RJ-45 crimping.
  • Experience operating cable testing and certification equipment (e.g., Fluke DSX, MicroScanner).
  • Working knowledge of TIA/EIA 568 cabling standards and data center infrastructure best practices.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints, cable schedules, and wiring diagrams.
  • Comfortable working in a data center environment, including hot/cold aisles, raised floors, and overhead cable trays.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to clean, compliant installations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work from ladders or elevated platforms as needed.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to report to the data center facility on a consistent schedule.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills for collaborating with on-site project teams.

Nice-to-Haves

  • BICSI Installer 1 or Installer 2 certification.
  • Experience working in colocation or hyperscale data center environments.
  • Familiarity with fiber optic cabling (single-mode or multi-mode) and basic fiber termination.
  • Knowledge of cable management systems from vendors such as Panduit, Leviton, or CommScope.
  • Experience with structured cabling project documentation software or ticketing platforms.
  • OSHA 10 certification or equivalent safety training.
  • Prior experience working within managed services or telecom contracting firms.

Education

A high school diploma or GED is required. Relevant trade school coursework, vocational certifications, or apprenticeship program completion is a plus. Industry certifications such as BICSI, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent low voltage licensing (where required by state) are strongly preferred and may be required depending on project location.

Pay & Benefits Summary

  • Competitive hourly wage: $22-$28/hr depending on experience and certification level.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance available after 60-day probationary period.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company matching.
  • Company-provided tools, PPE, and testing equipment.
  • Mileage reimbursement for work-related travel beyond the primary data center site.
  • Ongoing training and support for obtaining or renewing industry certifications.
  • Opportunities for overtime pay on large-scale cabling projects.
