What You Will Do

The Pit Technologies (PT) Division, part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP), is instrumental in delivering top-quality plutonium pit-related products and services. This division focuses on maintaining and enhancing the performance of nuclear components while following rigorous compliance and safety protocols. As a member of the PT-2 Machining Group within the PT Division, you will engage in complex machining and processing tasks, apply your engineering expertise, and mentor early-career employees in their professional development.

As a Machinist 2 at our nuclear facility, you will report to a FLM or MM1. Your responsibilities include:
  • Performing precision machining operations using various manual and CNC mills and lathes, as well as wire EDM machines, ensuring all work adheres to tight tolerances and safety standards.
  • Programming and setting up work from complex drawings, sketches, and CAD models, requiring a deep understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Communicating effectively through verbal and written means to collaborate with team members, interpret instructions, and share critical updates. This includes deciphering complex written and verbal communication and ensuring the clarity and accuracy of technical documents.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and editing technical documents and reports either on a computer or laptop, maintaining high standards of quality and compliance.
  • Traveling between meeting locations using a vehicle and navigating onsite facilities, including walking between buildings and secured areas, often requiring physical stamina.
  • Utilizing critical thinking and analytical skills to troubleshoot challenges, optimize machining processes, and ensure the highest level of precision.
  • Working in both classified and unclassified environments, handling sensitive information and communications with strict confidentiality.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience in the setup and operation of manual and CNC mills and lathes to produce parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances.
  • Skilled in applied shop mathematics.
  • Ability to perform basic precision measurements on parts using inspection tools including calipers, micrometers, and verniers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively exchange information and ensure alignment on complex machining tasks.
Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 2 years of related experience; OR, 4 years prototype experience; OR, Journeyperson qualification program and 2 years of related experience.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a High School Diploma.

Desired Qualifications:

  • CAD/CAM experience, preferably SolidWorks and Mastercam.
  • Demonstrated experience in the proper application and interpretation of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) to ASME Y14.5 standard.
  • Possess Journeyperson machining certificate.
  • Existing DOE "Q" clearance (or equivalent).
Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
