Position Overview
Hutco, Inc. is hiring Shipfitters J3 - J4 (Local Only) for our Steel Shop in Norfolk, Virginia. This role involves the layout, fabrication, and assembly of ship structures using blueprints, hand tools, and power tools. Candidates must be experienced with shipboard nomenclature and standards, including the 5S guidelines and Navy standard items.
Key Responsibilities
Journeyperson 4 (J4) - Shipfitter
- Plan and complete work independently using blueprints.
- Layout plates, pipes, and structural shapes, including flat and complex layouts involving projections and compound angles.
- Interpret shipboard structures and locate features relative to frames, longitudinal stringers, and centerlines.
- Understand and apply weld symbols for material preparation.
- Perform tack welding and burning; use power tools such as shears, saws, presses, and more.
- Create templates for fabrication and installation.
- Assemble foundations, deckhouses, and specialized ship structures.
- Follow 5S standards and be familiar with Navy standard items.
Journeyperson 3 (J3) - Shipfitter
- Work with minimal supervision.
- Proficient with hand tools like grinders, saws, and shears.
- Interpret weld symbols and blueprints to assist in the layout and assembly of bulkheads, foundations, handrails, and subassemblies.
- Perform tack welding and burning tasks.
- Adhere to 5S guidelines and Navy standard items.
Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Skills:
- Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical blueprints and weld symbols.
- Skilled in using manual and power tools for shipfitting tasks.
- Ability to plan, layout, and fabricate shipboard components.
- Experience:
- J4: Advanced knowledge and the ability to work independently on complex layouts.
- J3: Moderate experience with fabrication and shipbuilding standards under minimal supervision.
- Safety Knowledge:
- Familiar with OSHA safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
- Understanding of 5S standards for workplace organization and efficiency.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and move objects up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing ladders, crouching, kneeling, and stooping.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights aboard vessels.
- Exposure to varying temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions.
- Visual acuity required to operate machines and perform skilled trade tasks at close range.
Working Conditions
- Frequent movement across shipyard and vessels.
- Work in tight, confined spaces and open shipboard areas.
- Exposure to industrial environments, including noise, dust, welding fumes, and changing weather conditions.
