Job Description: Shipfitter
Pay: $20.00
Per-diem: $120.00
- The shipfitter contributes to all structural phases of a ship’s hull construction to include fitting, fabricating, assembly, and alignment of a ship’s structure.
- Performs fitting and machining operations such as straighten, grind, burr, drill, ream, and countersink materials to close tolerances.
- Refers to general instructions to select equipment, set up, and lay out materials to be welded.
- May repair or rework components to restore to required tolerances which have become distorted as a result of welding operations.
- May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
- May also inspect tack-welds completed by the assigned welder, or in some cases perform own tack welding work, for conformance to specifications.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements:
- Must have 3 years of recent experience working in a shipyard as a shipfitter.
- Must be able to pass all administered tests prior to being hired for the position.
- Must have experience using oxygen/propane burning and heating torch.
- Must be proficiently skilled in multi-pass tack welding.
- Must possess a good general knowledge of ship repair procedures and test requirements.
- Must possess a working knowledge of welding equipment and work processes commonly used in marine welding.
- Must be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence.
- Must be able to read blueprints.
- Must have a working knowledge of ship repair terminology and ship compartment naming convention.
- Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Must be physically and medically capable to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the job as prescribed under OSHA standards. PPE may include hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.
- Must be able to obtain a port pass.
Safety & Environmental Factors:
All employees are expected to adhere to the company’s safety policies to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. This role involves working under extreme hot or cold conditions and requires the physical ability to stand for the entire shift, use hands for various tasks, ascend stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. Team members must occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close, distant, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
