SUMMARY:

The Crane Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently maintaining and operating hydraulic and friction cranes up to 150 tons in capacity. This position is expected to continually work to obtain knowledge and experience, enroute to advancing his or her career. This advancement in knowledge and experience will be verified through testing and certification completion.  Once these requirements have been met, the employee is able to advance.

Our teamwork environment may require all employees from time to time to perform other duties outside of their job description and normal work functions.  Our standard work environment will be on a project site that is subjected to outdoor weather conditions and must utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in preparation for a variety of potential hazards.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Primary responsibility is to operate cranes up to 150 tons.
  • Operate light construction equipment such as air tuggers, air compressors, water pumps, generators, elevators, forklifts, smaller cranes, and similar construction equipment.
  • Willing to take on other job related responsibilities as requested by supervision and as limited by your individual qualifications.
  • May also operate heavy construction equipment, if qualified.
  • Turns valves, shifts levers, turns hand wheels, and depresses pedals to drive machines and control equipment and attachments.
  • Perform maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, and oiling machines and equipment.
  • Must know the manufacturer’s specifications and limitations applicable to the operation of any and all heavy equipment, such as load capacities, wind restrictions, operating speeds, special hazard warnings, and instructions.
  • Must be knowledgeable in assembly of all cranes.
  • Troubleshooting equipment in order to maintain the equipment in an operable and reliable state.
  • Must be knowledgeable in operation and use of load limit indicators and anti-2 block systems.
  • Must comply with plant policies and procedures regarding lifts.
  • Ensure that the proper matting is used during all lifts.
  • Must know standard hand signals and should also be knowledgeable of pertinent OSHA-regulations.
  • Validate proper rigging prior to making all lifts.
  • Working within all Bowen and client guidelines.
  • Completion of JSA’s.
  • Fully participate in health, safety, quality, and environmental processes.
  • Is an ambassador of Bowen to the client, other contractors, and to the public.
  • Leadership and Training
    • Must be willing to work well as part of a team.
    • Must be willing to provide guidance and on the job training experience to the other crafts.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have successfully completed all parts of specific Crane Certification Courses such as CII (Crane Institute of America).
  • Must have a NCCCO Certification for large and small telescopic boom.
  • Must be able to pass the NCCER Assessment Testing.
  • Complete appropriate Bowen skills assessment test(s).
  • Must have appropriate Operators Certification Card(s) to meet all state, local, and plant requirements.
  • Must be able to meet D.O.T. requirements, if required.
  • Sound knowledge of rigging skills.
  • Must have working knowledge of crane’s load limiter computer, if computer is installed.
  • Must have valid driver’s license or other government issued identification.
  • Must comply with Bowen’s drug and alcohol policy.
  • May be required to pass physical examination (pre-employment if necessary) as required by Bowen.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairways.
  • Must be able to carry 50 lbs. of tools and/or materials.
  • Must be able to work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces. (towers, vessels, excavations, etc.)
  • Must be able to work extended hours on your feet on uneven surfaces. (Dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.)
  • Must be able to pass applicable site-specific training.
  • Must undertake the appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with the position and location.
  • CPR and First Aid Trained, when required.
  • Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels and permits in English.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have 5 years of experience working with large capacity cranes (65 ton to 150 tons) for hydraulic or friction cranes, typical to the crane they will be operating.
  • NCCO Certification
  • Must be willing to attend continued training required by Bowen when deemed necessary.
