Position: Heavy Equipment Operator - Indiana
Job Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy machinery to support rail track construction projects. This includes handling equipment such as backhoes and loaders, performing maintenance, and adhering to safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate loaders, backhoes, and other heavy equipment to load, haul, and unload various materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment, referring defects or needed repairs to the supervisor. Clean and maintain equipment as necessary.
  • Ensure all duties are performed in compliance with company safety standards and procedures.
  • When needed, perform track laborer duties, assisting with rail construction and other tasks on site.

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Previous experience with rail construction equipment is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and front-end loaders.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to job sites for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure proper equipment operation and safety.
  • Superior communication skills, including verbal, non-verbal, and written communication. Active listening skills are essential.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write basic correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group settings to customers, clients, and other employees.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to solve typical problems encountered in rail construction projects.
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations
  • Certification required if operating on track controlled by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

Base Hourly Rate: $17.98

Max Hourly Rate: $36.30
