Whatcom County Public Works Maintenance & Operations has 1 vacancy for Heavy Equipment Operator. The Operator position takes a lead role in the safe and effective operations of M & O crews, and oversees assigned crew in the absence of supervisor or crew leader.

Duties include:

Safely and effectively operates assigned equipment within machine capacity to perform road and bridge repair and construction.

Responsible for ensuring safe operability and transport of assigned heavy equipment, and for suitable work zone conditions for safe operation of assigned equipment.

Assists other crew members in setting up safe and effective work zones and activities involving heavy manual labor.

Oversees assigned crew in the absence of supervisor or crew leader, ensuring efficient operation and safety of work zone, and use of Personal Protective Equipment.

Responds to diverse public inquiries in a courteous manner.Identifies customer needs, explains services clearly and promptly responds to requests.Evaluates priorities and independently addresses assignedmatters, inquiries and complaints.Provides information within the scope of knowledge and authority or refers to the proper person.

Completes routine paperwork as assigned and assures required forms are completed before work is begun. Organizes information clearly.

Prioritizes and plans own work activities in conjunction with Crew Leader, including pre-job review of work zone safety and traffic control plans and post-job review of plan effectiveness.May participate in safety reviews. Uses resources effectively.

Assesses compliance and interprets and applies regulations legally and equitably for assigned areas.

Maintains accurate and organized records, databases, systems and files.

Hours of Work: Monday - Friday 8 AM - 4:30 PM Summer hours Monday - Thursday 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Salary Range:
  • MCBA- Range 140.0 or 140.2
Hiring rate depends on qualifications. This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range (apx. 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA).
Qualifications

  • Requireshigh school diploma or GED AND three years ofrecent experience in the field of road construction and maintenance involving the operation of heavy equipment and power tools commonly used in road maintenance and construction activities.
  • Requires the proven ability to work safely, demonstrate situational awareness, and provide leadership and initiative on the job.
  • Must possess a certified Washington State Flagging and Traffic Control Card at time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must pass federally mandated Department of Transportation Commercial Driver's License (CDL) random drug and alcohol tests.
  • Must be eligible to cross between the United States and Canada.
  • Specialized Commercial Driver's License endorsements may be required at time of hire and throughout employment.
